Meditation can be defined as the practice or action of single pointed concentration on a concept or object. Dating back to at least 1500 BCE, meditation has a long and rich history. There are different types of mediation ranging from guided meditations to present moment or mindful meditations to walking meditation. There is a type of meditation to suit everyone.
Research has shown that regular meditation over a period of 8 weeks upwards, increases the mass of grey matter, hippocampus and frontal lobe which are associated with learning, memory, concentration, behaviour and emotion. Meditation produces extra GABA which generates a sense of calm and releases dopamine. The Amygdala that governs the survival and fear centre of the brain (fight or flight) shrinks. Over time, meditation will change the neuroplasticity of the brain and slow down the natural aging process.
Meditation can be done by anyone and can be done anywhere. It can reduce stress, depression, worry, anxiety and anxiety-related mental health issues. In addition, it can promote long-term emotional health, improved self-image and encourage a positive outlook on life .You begin to develop self-awareness. Meditation can strengthen your concentration, Over time, meditation will help you to have more compassion and empathy for yourself and others. It can help to improve sleep quality, reduce blood pressure, improve heart health and help to control pain.,
